Unfolding Value: A Comprehensive Look at the Velotric Fold 1 E-Bike
The first time I rode the Velotric Fold 1, I estimated it to be in the $1,300 to $1,400 price range, judging by its bright blue paint, sturdy yet slim frame, and comfortable ride. However, I was surprised to learn that it’s actually priced at just $999. This realization changed my perspective, as the bike’s features and components suddenly seemed more than adequate for its cost. While there are some compromises, they are minor, especially considering the budget-friendly price.
Velotric’s first folding e-bike, the Fold 1, comes equipped with standard features such as a hinged frame, stem, 20×3” knobby tires, a 7-speed drivetrain, hydraulic brakes, and front suspension. What’s remarkable, though, is its unexpectedly large 608 Watt-hour (Wh) battery, a 750W rear-hub motor, and an impressive payload capacity of 440 lbs, which includes the rider, passengers, and cargo on its 120-lb-rated rear rack.
When the Fold 1 arrived, it was nearly fully assembled in a compact box. All I had to do was unfold the frame, handlebar stem, and pedals, then attach the front wheel. The process was tool-free, as Velotric doesn’t include any tools in the box, but everything else you might need, including a manual, battery keys, and the charger, was provided. Even though the battery had a partial charge, I topped it off to 100% before my first ride.
Safety is a key consideration for Velotric, which is why the Fold 1’s battery and electronics are UL certified. This certification, along with an IPX7 waterproof rating for the battery and an IPX6 rating for the bike, ensures that the Fold 1 is designed to be used safely, even in inclement weather. However, it’s still important to be cautious when riding in the rain, especially when braking.
The Velotric Fold 1 is a Class 2 e-bike, with a default top speed of 20 mph for both throttle and pedal assist. However, it can be unlocked to reach speeds of up to 28 mph, and the throttle can propel the bike close to this speed as well. The Velopower drive system, with its 750W rear hub motor, delivers up to 1050W peak power and 70 N-m of torque. It performed admirably on a steep 15% incline, maintaining a speed of 9-10 mph with pedal assist.
The bike’s large capacity battery is centrally located under the seat, keeping the center of gravity low for better stability. The battery is easy to remove for off-bike charging or swapping out for extended rides. The Fold 1’s specifications include a Shimano 7-speed transmission, hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors, and 20×3 inch puncture-resistant tires. The 60mm front fork with hydraulic suspension smooths out bumps, making for a comfortable ride.
The Velotric Fold 1 also boasts some impressive durability features, including a waterproof rating of IPX7 for the battery and IPX6 for the bike itself. The saddle, designed for comfort on shorter, recreational rides, complements the bike’s overall build. While the monochrome LCD display lacks color, its high resolution makes it easy to read in all lighting conditions.
Velotric’s Fold 1 is not just a decent folding e-bike; it’s an exceptional value for its price. Although it may not be ideal for daily commuting due to its weight and lack of advanced features, it’s perfect for shorter riders or those looking for an accessible bike with good range. It offers a solid ride, impressive power, and excellent build quality, making it a great option for anyone in the market for a sub-$1000 e-bike.
